Eastside family center

Eastside family center provides free, walk-in therapy (individual, family or couples therapy) for individuals of all ages. They provide assistance with mental health concerns, life stressors, family stress and relationship issues. They provide access to therapy sessions with support from a team of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and family therapists.

Free focused counselling sessions are also available for youth and their families, providing several sessions with the same qualified therapist (accessed through a referral from Access Mental Health).

South Calgary Health Center (SCHC) – Sunpark Plaza

-Mental Health Walk-in-

Free mental health walk-in therapy for all ages, on a single-session basis. They provide access to clinical nurse specialists, psychologists and social workers. They provide Interpreter/Translation services.

-Adult Mental Health Service-

They provide one-on-one psychotherapy for adults with mental health concerns, for 8 to 12 sessions. Please contact Access Mental Health to arrange a referral. Wait time is approximately 2-4 weeks. They provide Interpreter/Translation services.

Distress Center Counselling

Free, general, short-term counselling support (1-6 sessions) during crisis situations (individual, family or couples counselling). They provide general support and do not provide specialized assessments or treatment for specific mental health/psychiatric disorders. Must meet their crisis situation criteria upon intake to access counselling.

Counselling is available by appointment or drop-in. Drop-in counselling is
available Monday-Friday 1pm-4pm.

Calgary Counselling Center

Individual (adult or child/youth), family or couples one-on-one counselling. Counselling is based on a sliding scale fee based on your income (low-income friendly).

They also offer group counselling programs that include a variety of program topics (depression, eating disorders, domestic abuse, self-esteem, and children and youth programs).

Centre for Sexuality

Free, short-term counselling to address challenges related to sexuality and sexual health, using a holistic and client-centered approach. This is a single session of counselling with the possibility of additional sessions on a case-by-case basis.

Some topics include (but are not limited to): gender identity, sexual orientation, coming out, family acceptance of sexual orientation or gender identity, medical/social transitioning, all options pregnancy counselling, decision making and communication, relationships and consent, and sexually transmitted infections.

Counselling for older adults (must be 65 years of age or older), family counselling (must have a child 24 years of age or younger), or Functional Family Therapy (must have a child 18 years of age or younger). All Fees are on a sliding scale based on income (low-income friendly).

Older Adults Counselling focuses on managing changes in lifestyle/roles due to age, which may cause anxiety and depression. These sessions help people learn:

  • Different ways of solving problems
  • Better communication with partners, children, and parents
  • Methods to cope with stress, depression, and anxiety
  • How to understand and manage a wide range of feelings
  • To strengthen community connections and support

Family Counselling helps develop a customized approach that will help you and your family achieve your goals by using your strengths to help deal with the difficulties you are facing. Family Counselling focuses on a variety of family concerns, including:

  • Mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, or trauma
  • ​Relationship problems
  • ​Family conflict
  • ​Domestic abuse
  • ​Separation and divorce
  • Parenting challenges
  • ​Grief and loss
  • ​Anger
  • ​Stress
  • Life transitions

Functional Family Therapy involves 10-14 sessions where you and your family will learn new skills and better connect with one another. The majority of these sessions take place in your home and the entire family is involved in the sessions. Functional Family Therapy focuses on helping families dealing with any of the following challenges:

  • Involvement with the youth criminal justice system
  • Family conflict
  • ​Problems at school
  • ​Mental health concerns

YW Counselling

Family counselling (ages 4+) available on an affordable and flexible sliding scale based on income (low-income friendly). Individuals in family counselling can also access individual or group counselling sessions. Counselling sessions focus on encouraging connections and help clients develop strategies that promote mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and resiliency. In Child and Family Counselling (families with children ages 4-17), children participate in art, talk, mindfulness practice and play therapy. Involvement and support from the entire family is encouraged.

CUPS

CUPS provides free health care and mental wellness services for adults, children and families in Calgary. Get mental health services, counselling, psychiatric assessment, medication support and addictions counselling. The CUPS Mental Health Clinic is accessible to CUPS clients with no regular family doctor (must qualify for low-income status). You will need a referral from CUPS Health Services.

Individual, Family and Grief Counselling for individuals with advanced illness (all ages and open to family members). Counsellors help families adjust to the changes in their lives. Support includes help with grief, end-of-life, and trauma counselling. Counselling is available to patients and families, and after the death of their person, adult family members are offered Bereavement Support.

Immigrant Services Calgary

  • Psychotherapy and Counselling

Individual, Couple and Family Counselling for immigrants and refugees, available on a sliding scale fee based on income (low-income friendly). Support includes areas such as: anger management, anxiety, depression, life transitions, loss and grief, parenting issues, self-esteem, marital conflicts, and other concerns.

Available in multiple languages including: English, French, Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi, Urdu, Hindi, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Polish, Punjabi and Tagalog.

A free Multicultural In-Home Support Program is also available to any families in need of intensive long-term support. A qualified in-home support worker will work with a family to identify and address issues.

An online free counselling program (Become a Better You) is also offered in individual, group or couples counselling sessions to address topics such as anger management, conflict resolution, effective communication, stress management, domestic violent and family relationships. Individual and group program sessions are 13 weeks long.
